NSW Rally Panel Takes Action on Cost Pressures in 2025

As the 2025 season heads into its second half, the NSW Rally Panel has been working behind the scenes on key initiatives to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the sport, with a strong focus on reducing costs for competitors and event organisers.

Following feedback from the rally community, the Panel developed a confidential working paper earlier this year outlining the barriers created by high licensing fees and additional medical requirements. This led to a full-day workshop with Motorsport Australia in April, attended by MA CEO Sunil Vohra and a mix of experienced rally competitors and officials.

“We had open, constructive dialogue with MA,” said NSW Rally Panel Chair Rob O’Toole. “The focus was on simplifying licence processes, introducing more accessible options for Clubman competitors, and reducing event running costs.”

Key discussion points included:

  • The financial strain of the current National Rally Licence and medical requirements
  • Options for lower-cost licence pathways for new and Clubman-level competitors
  • Rising insurance and event permit fees
  • The need for Motorsport Australia to lead on shared responsibilities like traffic planning and certification
  • Ensuring access to forestry roads remains viable across NSW
  • Acknowledging the value of AMSAG events and ensuring the sustainability of the State Rally Series

While no formal outcomes have yet been announced, the Panel is optimistic that changes will be communicated by Motorsport Australia later in 2025.

The NSW Rally Panel remains committed to making rallying more accessible and sustainable for all competitors and encourages the community to stay engaged.  A full copy of the report can be found below.
